Pitfalls in abdominal diffusion-weighted imaging – How specific is restricted water diffusion for malignancy?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Purpose As DWI is increasingly implemented into routine protocols of abdominal MRI, positive findings both in expected as in unexpected locations become more common and might constitute diagnostic problems especially in patients with suspected benign disease. The aim of our retrospective study was to investigate the potential pitfalls of false positive findings in abdominal DWI by identifying benign lesions that have restricted diffusion and therefore might mimic malignant tumors.

Pitfalls of diffusion-weighted imaging of the female pelvis
Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is widely used in protocols for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the female pelvis. It provides functional and structural information about biological tissues, without the use of ionizing radiation or intravenous administration of contrast medium. High signal intensity on DWI with simultaneous low signal intensity on apparent diffusion coefficient maps is usu...
متن کاملSignal Intensity of High B-value Diffusion-weighted Imaging for the Detection of Prostate Cancer
Background: Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is a main component of multiparametric MRI for prostate cancer detection. Recently, high b value DWI has gained more attention because of its capability for tumor characterization. Objective: To assess based on histopathological findings of transrectal ultrasound (TRUS)-guided prostate biopsy as a reference, an...
متن کاملبررسی ارزش Diffusion Weighted Imaging در تصاویر MRI برای تشخیص سرطان پروستات
Background: Prostate cancer is the third leading cause of death and is the most common cause of cancer in elderly men. Regarding to the low accuracy of screening methods such as prostate-specific antigen (PSA), Digital Rectal Examination (DRE) and trans rectal ultrasound (TRUS) in detection and localization of tumor, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Diffusion Weighted Imaging (DWI) attracte...
متن کاملDynamic Contrast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DCE-MRI) and Diffusion Weighted MR Imaging (DWI) for Differentiation between Benign and Malignant Salivary Gland Tumors
Background: Salivary gland tumors form nearly 3% of head and neck tumors. Due to their large histological variety and vicinity to facial nerves, pre-operative diagnosis and differentiation of benign and malignant parotid tumors are a major challenge for radiologists. Objective: The majority of these tumors are benign; however, sometimes they tend to transform into a malignant form. Functional M...
متن کاملDiffusion Kurtosis Imaging in Prostate Cancer
Introduction: Diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) and the calculated apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) is showing potential for improving detection of prostate cancer (PCa), as the increased cellularity of many tumors is associated with restricted water diffusion and thus with a decreased ADC [1,2]. The ADC assumes Gaussian water diffusion and is calculated by monoexponential fitting. However, ...
